Mariam’s Story

Mariam Alimi is one of Afghanistan’s first professional female photographers. She started her work in Kabul in 2007 but was forced to flee the country after the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021. She and her family currently reside in Maryland and are working on rebuilding their lives. She is a women’s rights activist and has worked in public and private entities, and with international organizations.
